About La Jolla

City History
La Jolla was originally inhabited by Native Americans, the Kumeyaay and was incorporated as part of San Diego in 1850. It wasn’t until Frank Botsford arrived in 1886 that land began to be parceled and sold to settlers. He is now known as the “Father of La Jolla.”
A few years later the railroad arrived and brought with it more people. La Jolla Park Hotel opened its doors in 1893 and homes began to appear along Prospect Street and Girard Avenue. In 1900, its residents numbered just 350, by 1920 that had increased to 4000.
The area became known as an artistic retreat and as a recreational destination. The idyllic seaside location combined with lovely weather made La Jolla a great place to spend time.
City Character
The character of La Jolla still has recreation and the sea in its soul. The town is host to world-renowned research institutions, breathtaking beaches, distinguished art galleries, and top-notch restaurants.
The area is a wealthy one, so has a number of private clubs, gold clubs and activities for the rich and famous. It also caters for the rest of us and includes watersports and cultural activities for all.
Being a relatively new town, there isn’t as much history in La Jolla as there is in say, San Diego. We have a very active historical society though, who prides itself on creating a vibrant and complete history of the area.
City Economy
Much of La Jolla’s economy is made up of leisure industries. There are a large number of vacation rentals in the town, and hotels generally boast over 80 percent occupancy year round.
There are a number of software and biotechnology companies around the town that provide employment for those who live here. Research also plays a part in the local economy, with a couple of large institutes calling La Jolla home.
The average income in La Jolla is slightly higher than usual, but then so are the real estate prices. Those fortunate enough to own a property have seem appreciation in values even during a recession.
La Jolla is a lovely place to vacation or live if you have the means. The residents are friendly and welcoming and there is everything here you could possibly need. With transport links to San Diego, It’s a great place to vacation or stay.
